Breeding Philosophy

Initially, my goal was to breed the "perfect" Peruvian Paso Horse. Realizing that a goal of perfection is indefinable and therefore unattainable, the focus shifted to that of consistently breeding horses with "ideal qualities" of the breed. For me, the ideal Peruvian Paso Horse must, have the requisites of proper gait with extended thread, possess the proper conformation for soundness and exhibit intelligent, tractable behavior with athleticism and excellent brio.

Although, I find the aesthetic appeal of certain colors, beautiful heads, long sculpted necks and luxuriant manes/tails to be attractive features, I deliberately excluded such factors in making breeding decisions. This approach has allowed the good fortune of reaching the primary goal. A bonus, has been the simultaneous development of wonderful aesthetic qualities. Many of our strongest performers happen to be "drop dead" gorgeous, with compelling charisma.

Although competing in shows has not been our primary focus, this activity is necessary for many reasons. It provides crediblity and publicity for the ranch and the opportunity to have an independent comparison of one breeding program to that of others. We are proud of the overall results. They include winning National Reserve Champion Breeding Stallion with Sr. Fernando Grana as judge, National Junior Champion Mare at a large show in Fort Worth, many Regional Champion and Reserve Champion titles in Performance and Breeding Division, several Champion of Champion wins, two Best of Bozal Titles, several top overall performance titles, blue ribbons in trail classes, a First Place in Owner to Ride at a National Show with over 20 excellent competitors, First Place in several Zootechnico Classes and virtually all categories, including, Champagne Classes, Bareback, Special Showmanship and first place in the only two Crystal Classes (horses 12 years and older) that we entered. Many or our wins since the year 2000 are detailed in the Show Page of this website.

Although we have won more than our share of awards in Peruvian Paso Shows, I am most proud of our record in six All Gaited Breed Shows in the Northwest United States . Since moving to Oregon we have competed in six large Gaited Breed Shows, located in Carson City, Nevada, Monroe WA., Puyallup, WA.Albany, OR and the Oregon State Fair in Salem, OR with Sr. Raul Del Solar as judge. The result of these six shows are four Best of Show, two Reserve Championships and many secondary awards. In one show we entered four horses in a large gait class and won 1st, 2cnd, 3rd and 4th places.

The Curry Ranch goal is to continue on the path of sound fundamentals and accept "beauty" as icing on the cake. ( Please click on Trail and Show ).
