Curry Ranch Wood Products:

Firestarters

The "Firestarter" is product developed here at Curry Ranch. It consists of juniper wood chips held together by paraffin and embodies two cotton wicks. The product is provided in two sizes. The smaller size is designed for general outdoor use, such as camping in ordinary circumstances. The larger model is specifically designed for “ survival “ conditions, i.e. for persons in desperate need of starting a fire in snow or wet/windy conditions, without dry firewood.

The small model is provided in a sealed plastic bag, two per bag. This size is excellent for starting charcoal briquets or starting campfires under normal to moderately adverse conditions. It burns for approximately 15 minutes, weighs 2 ½ ounces and measures 3 ½ inches in diameter by 1 inch thickness.

The survival model is individually shrink wrapped along with six waterproof matches, a striking surface and instructions. The survival model weighs 5 ounces and measures almost 4 inches in diameter by 2 inches thickness.

Each size has two cotton, wax impregnated wicks. Either wick may be used for convenience, or the firestarter will light directly without use of the wicks. In windy conditions, the wicks can by tucked into the hollow center. This protects the flame from wind, during the first few seconds of burning. I have tested these firestarters under a wide variety of conditions and do not believe there is any product available with better performance, safety or convenience. A video is available demonstrating the ability to start a fire in mud, during rain and wind, using tree limbs that had been wet for 48 hours. Within 3 minutes, I had a roaring fire, using one of the smaller size firestarters. They will float in water, are impervious to moisture and have an indefinite shelf life. Samples, video and/or further information is available on request.

This series of photos demonstrates the use of a medium size firestarter in a wood stove. This first photo shows the lighting of one of the two wicks.

After a few seconds, the wick ignites the juniper/paraffin firestarter:

The only products used were one firstarter, juniper kindling and firewood. No flammable additive, such as lighter fluid, was utilized.
