The Juniper and Curry Ranch's commitment to the environment One
feature of our region is an overabundance of western juniper trees
(Juniperus occidentalis). The overgrowth of Western Juniper is
attributed to intensive grazing of range land by livestock in the early
part of the 20th Century, giving the hardy juniper trees an
environmental advantage against native grasses. Selective
harvesting of juniper trees is now helping to reverse this imbalance
and provide a renewable source of energy while restoring wildlife
habitat and improving water resources. Although difficult to harvest,
juniper wood has excellent qualities for firewood and animal bedding.
The regional abundance of juniper wood allows us to produce some
excellent products at very competitive prices. At
Curry Ranch we protect these beautiful historic Juniper trees, which we
estimate at being over a thousand years old. We protect these wonderful
trees for future generations to enjoy, and through the selective
thinning process provide an environment that allows native grasses to
grow and the remaining trees to be more healthy. Click here to go to next page: Environmental Advantages of Thinning
